Testing New Molds

At Alpha Honey Farm, testing wicks for our beeswax candles is a meticulous, science-driven process to ensure optimal performance and safety. When introducing a new candle mold, we conduct rigorous burn tests using our signature 100% pure beeswax and organic hemp wicks. For example, in the photo below, a candle from our latest mold shows minimal burn-down even after 5 continuous hours-a testament to beeswax’s slow, efficient burn rate. This candle is projected to last dozens of hours more, far outpacing paraffin or soy alternatives.

Our Wick Testing Process

We start by testing multiple hemp wick sizes in identical molds, following industry-standard burn protocols. Each candle is labeled with the wick type, lit in a draft-free environment, and monitored for:

Melt pool depth and diameter (ideally reaching the container’s edge within 2–3 hours).

Flame stability (no flickering or excessive height).

Soot or mushrooming (indicators of improper wick size).

After 4 hours, we extinguish the candle, document results, and adjust wick thickness or length as needed. This iterative process ensures even burning and maximizes longevity.

Why Beeswax Burns Slower

Beeswax has a high melting point (~145°F) and dense structure, requiring more heat to liquefy than paraffin or soy. For context, a beeswax candle burns 30–50% slower than paraffin, offering exceptional value and reducing waste.

Health Risks of Conventional Candles

Most mass-market candles use paraffin wax (a petroleum byproduct) and synthetic wicks, which release carcinogens like benzene and toluene when burned. These toxins contribute to headaches, respiratory issues, and long-term health risks. Cheap wicks may also contain lead or zinc cores, releasing harmful particulates into the air.
